An Analysis of Olaudah Equianos The Middle Passage

Middle Passage by Olaudah Equiano One of the most interesting arguments that modern apologists makes for the practice of race-based slavery in the Americas is the fact that slavery existed in Africa during that time period and that Africans were complicit in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. What is fascinating about Olaudah Equianos discussion of the Middle Passage is that, as a man who had been enslaved in Africa prior to being shipped as a slave to the Americas, he was in a unique position to describe slavery in Africa with his introduction to European-influenced slavery in North America. His perception was that the immense brutality of the Middle Passage foreshadowed the dehumanization of slaves in the Americas, which was more inhumane than the treatment he had received as a slave while in Africa. Furthermore, he did not suggest that this brutality was linked to the race of the traders, though that seemed to have been his initial impression, but to the nature of the Trans-Atlantic trade. Therefore, Equianos writin gs suggest that shipping Africans across the ocean for slavery was part of the dehumanizing process that helped fuel the practice of slavery in America. Initially, Equiano had a tremendous amount of worry related to the appearance of the slave traders and that initial discomfort was based upon racial differences. Compare Contrast the Theme of Horror in Frankenstein and...

Michelle Cardwell English Literature – Understanding Literature Compare Contrast the use of ‘horror’ in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein The gothic horror genre is a favourite for many readers. We love the suspense and mystery, the desperation, the doom and gloom, the claustrophobia, even the blood. But most of all we love the fear - the feeling we get that gives us pathos with the protagonist that keeps us on the edge of our seats and propels us to turn the page. How do Shelley and Shakespeare provoke our reactions when reading Macbeth (Shakepeare,1606) and Frankenstein (Shelley, 1818)? When comparing and contrasting the two texts an awareness of the different formats is necessary: Macbeth is a play and†¦show more content†¦Walton then changes subject making the previous subject seem indifferent, however the reader is left wondering what unnatural event has been foreshadowed. In chapter four Victor tells Walton of his obsessive behaviour but will not divulge his secret, leaving the reader in as much suspense as Victor’s audience. â€Å"I see by your eagerness, and the wonder and hope which your eyes express, my friend, that you expect to be informed of the secret with which I am acquainted; that cannot be† (Ch 4, pg 54) Like Shakespeare, Shelley uses elements of supernatural forces, the monster seems to appear from nowhere at various stages – always foreshadowing tragedy, much the same way as the witches do in Macbeth. She is keen to inform us that, unlike the characters in Macbeth, Victor is not affected by superstition, â€Å"I do not ever remember to have trembled at a tale of superstition, or to have feared the apparition of a spirit† (Ch 4, pg 53). This is a complete contrast to the eponymous hero in Shakespeare’s play. Macbeth is traumatised by the appearance of several apparitions including that of Banquo’s ghost: â€Å"thou canst not say I did it; never shake thy gory locks at me!† (III, 4, 50-51). Although Shakespeare’s play is predominantly supernatural, Shelly focuses on the unnatural rather than supernatural. The very ‘birth’ of the monster is unnatural, but the same can be said of Macbeth, being born by caesarean section. Film Review Children of Heaven Essay Example For Students

Film Review Children of Heaven Essay The film† Children of Heaven† shows people a totally different kind of life. The film follows the main characters Ali and his little sister Zahra, who are born in a poor family in Iran. It shocks many students who first watch this movie. In China there are many families who are very poor, especially those in the small villages. This knowledge enables a common experience as the main characters in some aspects. The movie is very simple but it holds a lot of meaning. People can obtain new information about the world and learn a lot from this movie, it even causes people to have new ideas about the world after watching it. The movie describes the hard life of people who live in the slums. All the residents of this area need to work for a long time everyday. They do not have anytime to relax even on the weekend. They need to earn money to get food and water, but they still do not get enough of what they need even after they work so hard. Ali’s father needs to do more work because his wife is sick and needs to rest, he needs to support his family by himself. So obviously, the young children need to do the housework and other chores for their family. It is very unusual for most people to see this. Because most people just have fun with friends when they are at this age. This young boy from the Iran has to help his parents in order to do anything. It is not easy work for a child. And they lack of much basic resources that most people have such as toys and shoes. There were not any toys in their house, and a lot of average children have toys when they are young. On the other hand, the place where they live is dirty and noisy. There are no plants, so the quality of air must be terrible. The city has dirty water and rubbish everywhere, creating a really bad environment. But the environment is very nice when they go to suburbs. The houses are big and have beautiful gardens. The streets are all clean. You cannot find any rubbish on them. It seems ideal. The people that live there dress really nice and the young children have many toys. These young children do not care about their food or clothes. Their life seems perfect. It is completely different from Ali’s life. All these factors show the difference between their social standings. The life is so different for the people at the slums. The rich people get everything. But the poor families even have problems with finding the necessities. Ali and his neighbors share a water pipe with each other. That is the only clean water they can get, and the children need to wear the same shoes to school because they know their father cannot buy them a new pair. The lifestyle is too different between the rich people and poor people. Actually, this also happens in China. The villages are really dirty and noisy. But people can get food and clean water. People also can even buy new clothes sometimes. Chinese life is better than theirs. The cities are clean and modern. There are many shopping malls. Rich people can buy everything there and people also have public resource too. But the village does not have anything. The distribution of wealth is not fair. But this situation is really common in the world now. Hopefully the world can help the poor more even if people just give them clothes and food. Another good thing about this movie is the relationships between people are stronger than others. The brother and sister understand each other better, and they know their father is really tired and stressed but that he loves them very much. .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 , .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .postImageUrl , .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 , .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7:hover , .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7:visited , .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7:active { border:0!important; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7:active , .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7 .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ue611c2a61cd1fc59f4eeaf003b2ec0c7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Movie Summary - Memento EssayAn example is when the children do not tell their father that they need shoes. The bother let the little sister wear his shoes on the morning. Then he would wear the shoes when his sister came back. But he has to run to school every time. This is a very odd and unique kind of situation before. On the contrast, most children who are born in rich families are always very naive when they are this age. On the other hand, the neighbors also have a better understanding of each other. They are willing to help other people, because they live at same place and environment. They understand their life is not easy and everyone needs help sometimes. The old man just pays Ali more money and tries to help his family when he knows Ali’s mother was sick and could not work. It also has happened in small villages in China. The neighbors are really kind and people help each other a lot, there was always love around us. But this atmosphere is disappearing. When families move from small villages to the city, it is hard to get to know the neighbors. It is sad for the children in that situation. Young children new to the city often do not even have a friend play with. As a result kids become very wayward because their parents gave them everything they wanted and they does not know how to communicate well with others. The life of poor family is hard but they understand and appreciate the value of family better. And they respect each other more. The connection between people is better, and they know how to respect and help others. This is a really valuable skill to have. Many people who are born in rich families tend to look down on the people who are poor. It is not good for the society’s development. In terms of whether or not the movie is good, that is all a matter of opinion. The part in â€Å"When Is A Movie Great† that stood out the most was when the old lady was quoted as saying, â€Å"if you didn’t feel the first excitement, you will never quite understand what it meant. † That is what makes a movie great, the feeling people have for it is what drives sales. It may not be a critically great movie, but the does not mean it will not make money. The emotion and following that gather because of a movie is more powerful than anything a critic will every say. So this movie is a great movie. Most people have some ideas after watching it. Some people even cried. The things happened in movie shocked many people. On the other hand, this movie shows most people a great contrast in society that they did not know about. Many people do not know the value of the thing they have. Maybe people will cherish their things better after watching this movie. The brave attitude for the life and the understanding between the people will help but only if one can learn from it. People need to be more warm-hearted and help those less fortunate when one has chance or power. Bibliography: Thomson, David. When Is a Movie Great? The Perils of Medium and Magic. Why The Vegetarian Diet Is Best Essays - Diets, Intentional Living

Why The Vegetarian Diet Is Best Why the Vegetarian Diet is Best The vegetarian diet is becoming increasingly popular all the time. Is the vegetarian or meat diet better? A decade ago and earlier, the impression was that a vegetarian diet was lacking in the nutrients found in meat products. Today though, through research and nutritional science, it has been proven that all the nutrients found in meat can also be found in the correct vegetarian diet. Some may argue that by only consuming meat that is low in fat, meat and vegetarian diets have identical benefits. This is true only if one eats only very low fat meat. The lack of meat is not necessarily the main benefit of to the vegetarian. Vegetarians tend to eat more fruits, vegetables and grains that the meat eater. They also tend not to use tobacco and excessive alcohol. In addition, vegetarians tend to get more exercise. The term vegetarian can be misleading. This diet can take on many different variations. A fruitarian eats only fruits, seeds and nuts while the vegan eats these and vegetables, grains and legumes. A lacto vegetarian consumes the same as a vegan as well as dairy products. A lacto-ovo vegetarian follows after the lacto vegetarian but also includes eggs while the ovo vegetarian excludes dairy products. Finally, the partial vegetarian eats anything except red meat, or at least strictly limits it. Because the term vegetarian is used to cover all facets and variations, it is difficult to identify health benefits resulting from the vegetarian diet including all of the above. Most meat eaters do not realize that there are so many variations to the vegetarian diet, which makes accurate studies even more difficult. As a whole though, vegetarians tend to have less body fat than nonvegetarians. This is most likely due to the low fat and high carbohydrate content of their diet. Vegetarians usually have lower blood pressure than meat eaters because of lifestyle and diet. Other factors probably include exercise and resistance to smoking and alcohol intake. Coronary artery disease is directly related to saturated fat intake. In studies testing cholesterol levels, vegetarians beat out all others including those that only ate lean meats. Milk, however, lowers blood cholesterol, as does soy. Another benefit is the lack of digestive disorders among vegetarians. It is possible that this is directly related to the high fiber content consumed. The last main benefit of the vegetarian diet is its relationship to cancer rate reduction, especially colon cancer. People who develop colon cancer tend to eat more meat, less fiber, and more saturated fat than those without colon cancer. This is the same case with lymphatic cancer. The only advantage a meat eater might have over a vegetarian would be during pregnancy and childhood. Studies have shown that children grow best when they eat meat products. Likewise, vegetarian women may enter pregnancy too thin and be lacking in stores of nutrients. Obviously, there are advantages and drawbacks to both diets however I feel the vegetarian diets advantages greatly outweigh its shortcomings. Whether a meat eater or vegetarian, both diets can contribute to good health with proper planning.
